Not updating display settings when unplugging VGA cable

Not updating display settings when unplugging VGA cable

When I unplug the VGA cable form my Laptop, Ubuntu still seems to think
that it is plugged in and does't update the display. Same goes for when I
plug the cable in: the monitor won't display Ubuntu.
The quickfix:
open system settings
click Displays
When I boot my laptop in Windows, it seems to work perfectly fine. So it's
not the monitor.
I'm using the proprietary 313 Nvidia driver.
Since I hate applying the quickfix every time, I would like Ubuntu to
update the display settings automagically whenever the VGA cable gets
plugged in/out. How would I do that?
